The Ladder vs. Fly From Here – 488

Fly From Here DVD

Produced by Wayne Hall, Jeffrey Crecelius and Preston Frazier

This week Mark and I are delving deeply into a 5% for something topic so if you consider yourself a casual fan of the world’s greatest progressive rock band you can either stick around and learn or save yourself a chunk of time by leaving now. I recommend you stay and become inducted into the mindset of the YMP enthusiasts. It’s fun, or at least I’ve found it so for 10 years now.

So assuming you are still with me, we will be diving into a comparison of two Yes albums, The Ladder and Fly From Here, based on our own, entirely arbitrary measures. Do let me know if you agree or disagree with our findings by commenting on the show notes for this week’s episode or maybe opening your window and shouting for the world to hear – whichever you’d prefer.

  • Which album is ‘better’?
  • What is the artwork like?
  • What is the music and production like?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Yes singles part 19 – Fly From Here – 342

Produced by Robert Nasir, Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier

We consider the singles (if any) from Fly From Here this week and talk about this difficult time in the band’s history – a bit. There’s also a Two Pence segment where Mark is disappointed with his latest Pledge Music acquisition…

  • Were there any singles from Fly From Here?
  • Why was Oliver Wakeman not on this album?
  • Was Trevor Horn an asset or too controlling?

Jon Anderson – Prog God – 241

Jon Anderson Prog God 2016
Jon Anderson Prog God 2016

In the week when Jon Anderson is deified as the 2016 Prog God, we discuss Yes’ whole album live obsession and the fact that Trevor Horn appeared on stage with them again this week. Mark reviews Fly From Here which fits in rather well and Kevin reads the Prog magazine articles about Jon Anderson.

  • What’s Fly From Here like in retrospect?
  • What has Prog magazine to say about its new Prog God?
  • Is there another Trevor Horn-produced album on the way?

Hidden Yes gems in your collection – 219

Yesterdays
Yesterdays Roger Dean label

In a shorter episode because of Easter, I think about some aspects of Yes albums I don’t normally dwell on. Also, Mark Anthony K reviews a remarkable Billy Sherwood album.

  • What hidden gems can you think of?
  • What are your favourite vinyl record labels?
  • Are CDs as good as you older record labels?

Listen to the episode and then let me know what you think!
