Trident Studios Tales with Jon Pickles – 658

Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller

Mark was back this week and we welcomed YMP listener and Patron Jon Pickles onto the show to talk about the time he was a ‘tea boy’ at Trident Studios in London. You’ll need to listen to the interview to hear all about it but Trident was the world-renowned studio where, amongst unnumbered highlights of rock music, Yes recorded overdubs for their first album, Queen recorded their first two albums and The Beatles recorded Let It Be and other seminal songs.

Listen out for stories about Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Trevor Horn and many more!

  • What did Jon have to do as a ‘tea boy’?
  • Who did he meet and work with?
  • What was it like being in Soho in those days?

Let us know if you agree with us!

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts.

Hiya Kevin, Mark and ( this week) Jon.

Hope all and your families are well. Glad to learn the extreme cold temperatures have risen in the ‘Great White North’ for Mark. Another record has just fallen here, it’s going to be the latest onset of the monsoon since meteorological records began. So it remains brutally hot outside and hard to progress work during the middle of the day.

This morning The Boy and I went for our pre-dawn trek through the forest listening to Jon’s absorbing description of his apprenticeship at Trident studios in London. It seems a world away but I was captivated by Jon’s anecdotes of that time. Jon is a great story teller and each of his responses to your questions seemed to make an intriguing and pertinent point. I was fascinated. Thanks to Mark and Jon I learnt quite a bit about the old school recording process..

I think having Jon on the podcast was an inspired choice, and I’m sure his well of annecdotes remains far from dry, so maybe he could come back on sometime to continue the conversation?

I did note a couple of weeks ago in the podcast comments, Jon’s observation about Trevor H having been a somewhat unsympathetic character in the studio at that time. I had briefly wondered what had been the basis for that assertion? Now I completely understand.

Jon I enjoyed your recollection of heading to the movies to watch ‘Alien’ with Brand X. Speaks volumes about the lads.

Finally I was interested to hear of the offer made to join a touring band on a world tour, and the possible future that may have held for you…But Jon, if you’re happy and content with your life today then you undoubtably made the right choice!

Thanks team for another great episode.

I’m still waiting for your episode ‘Six reasons why ‘90125 the solos’ is a great Yes album’.

Hello Alan,
Great to hear from you. Hope you are doing well.
I’m pleased you enjoyed the episode…I really enjoyed speaking to Jon. As someone who still works in a studio environment (even if it is a smaller home studio)..it was great picking his brain about various recording techniques and processes. We will have him back again for sure. There is still a lot more I’d love to talk to him about.
As for the 6 reasons “9012Live” edition…I will mention it to Kevin.

Hope you have a great week.

Mark Anthony K

Mark, the ‘6 reasons why 90125 was a great album’, was just a cheeky quip. Don’t bother Kevin with it. You might get to reason two and run out of things to say….
