This week Mark and I take a look at and have a chat about what Yes fan Ian Hartley has done to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tales from Topographic Oceans. A chap after our own 5%-er hearts, he has taken things very much into his own hands as you will hear. If you want to understand fully what we are banging on about (if that’s even possible) then watch the video Ian made of the set which I have embedded below.
- What has Ian been up to?
- Why have Yes not released any 50th Anniversary editions?
- Just how did Ian do this?

Our (not really) new Facebook YMP Discussion Group is open to anyone to join but I’ll be adding rules and joining requirements when I have time (one day…). One of the advantages of the new format is that all members of the group have the same ability to post content, so it’s a bit more egalitarian, or somesuch. Please do search for the group and join in.

Theme music
The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from: archive.org

Pretty sweet I would bet that Yes could have a special 50th on Tales with all the out takes live stuff they could really clean up on this …lol
Great Show can’t wait till next week..
Fascinating work by Ian. Kevin & Mark, I still have my banded version of Tales from my radio days. Chris told me in my ’75 interview that someone at Atlantic, not Offord or any band member, spent some amount of time deciding where to add the fade-outs on each side, then the fade-ins, so as to minimize the disruptions to the music. He said the band members were very unhappy when they found out that Atlantic did that without their assistance or their approval. I’ll see if I can find a video or audio file of this version online & post it here or on the Facebook page. It used to be on YouTube but my search for it today so far has come up empty.
I got a laugh from Ward’s self-deprecating comment in the intro: “I’m smart. I’m English.” Good to hear. Most Americans view the English that way: Totally clueless given that England is one of the poorest western countries and no longer home to more than two universities anyone abroad would even consider attending for their PhDs or even BAs.
Not trying to put the English down. You gave us prog rock, after all! And that is a great accomplishment.
“one of the poorest western countries and no longer home to more than two universities anyone abroad would even consider attending for their PhDs or even BAs.”
Not to put the UK down you say? Hmmm…your opinion is ludicrous. When did UK get booted out of rhe G7? Have you seen the number of non-UK students studying at Imperiall just to give you one example?
You obviously didn’t get the point. Felicity ward is not British, she’s Australian. What you said about British universities is utter rubbish. People from all over the world go to those other than Oxbridge especially from the USA
Ian has been doing this for ever and goes back some 40 years as a Yes friend contact. Yes management are aware of his private pressings and his work. Obviously none of it is sanctioned and sold.
His work is outstanding and yet not available however it shows fans what dedication, time, love, money and a great deal of work can achieve.
I admire what he produces for himself and as a fan I would like to see similar from WB coming out.
My good mate Jon Dee with some luck may well even produce something similar, we certainly hope so and it is our aim for next year….with Everything crossed in that silly English way of expressing hope.
He didn’t put a cardboard cow in his set?
Amateur…
