Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier
This week, Mark and I had the pleasure of speaking to Billy Sherwood about Arc Of Life, the band and the album.
We also asked him about the widely rumoured new Yes studio album and he was, unsurprisingly, less forthcoming about that. It did lead to some light-hearted moments which we think you will enjoy though.
- Where did Arc Of Life spring from?
- Who plays what?
- What are the plans for the future of the band?

Theme music
The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Great job, guys. Only wish it was longer, but I know Billy is doing a lot of press/media right now, usually in 30 minute blocks.
Regarding the new Yes album, if you haven’t figured out, Alan is the one who talks freely about what’s happening with albums, tours or any plans. He’s been that way since the 70s, much to the chagrin of Steve nowadays, who prefers to surprise fans with releases & any news. I guarantee you that Alan heard from Steve & management after talking to Sean about the new Yes album. Alan is just an honest, straight talking man. Now, what I’ve heard is that the album should be out by June, BUT could be delayed until the fall- it depends on when they do the UK tour. Management & the record company want the album, naturally, to come out shortly before the tour, with some new songs in the set list along with ‘Relayer’ and classic tunes. The tour will almost certainly be pushed back to the fall due to Covid. Sadly, many artists have already postponed to the fall so there will be conflicts as everyone will be on the road then into winter & next year. There are already conflicts between fall Genesis & Steve Hackett UK dates. It’s going to be crazy with shows & album releases.
Well done guys each Friday is a Yessy day. Good interview and yes you could do an hour with Billy easy.
Plenty to chat about as always to keep you busy this year I am sure, everything crossed for Yestor visit, any shows, tours, and health all round.
Keep well both of you and the small team of dedicated Yesheads there at YMP towers.
Another excellent interview. Hearing from Billy always leaves me with the feeling that the band’s legacy is in really good hands. Far more intrigued to hear the Arc Of Life album in full after that.
On a related subject I’ve been really enjoying the Prog Collective instrumental mixes recently. I had no idea they existed until I noticed them on Spotify. I far prefer them to the vocal versions. Not because the songs or vocal performances are bad in themselves but because it means you can really focus on the playing. If anyone from the label is listening might be an idea to put all the instrumentals on one 2 x cd release. Makes me want to dig my old Return To Forever, Jean Luc Ponty and Al DiMeola records out. Which is no bad thing. I also wasn’t aware that there is a third album in the offing. According to Amazon at least.
The only downside is the loud and insistent / persistent snare sound that was the dominant feature in the live mix at London Palladium shows. Seems to be a bit of a Billy production trademark. Maybe I am old and general deterioration has left me more vulnerable to loud sounds (it is Tinnutus Week in the UK this week btw – please give generously!) but my goodness do my ears need a good rest after an hour or so of that.
