Anyone for tennis – and a pint? In conversation with Yes drummer, Jay Schellen – 621

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller

We were delighted to be able to speak to Jay Schellen this week about the upcoming Yes UK and Europe Tour and many other topics, particularly his relationship with the late, great Alan White. As you will hear, Jay’s connections with Yes are numerous and he is a truly talented all-round musician, not ‘just’ a drummer.

Stand by for surprising stories, tennis and visits to the pub…

  • How did Jay find himself playing with so many Yes men?
  • What did he learn from Alan White?
  • What is it like playing with Downes, Howe, Davison and Sherwood?

Let us know if you agree with us!

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from: archive.org

Jay is such a nice man, and an easy interview subject. I first met him when I interviewed Badfinger in ’82, then with Hurricane opening for Gary Moore in ’87, opening for Stryper in ’88, with Circa in ’08, and with Yes at many shows since ’16. Jay & his wife Barb are a lovely couple.
