Yes virtuosity – 673

Mark and I really enjoyed discussing what Yes virtuosity means to us with the help of YMP Patrons Brian Harris, Michael OConnor, HB Pettersen, Jon Pickles, Dave Owen, Gary Betts, Mark Slater and Ronnie Neeley this week. Can you guess what we all chose for our examples of Yes virtuosity? You might be surprised, as Mark and I were.

There were some common themes that emerged which is always encouraging because it means we are not on our own in our thoughts about the band. So thank you to all those Patrons but do have your own say by adding a comment to the show notes for this week.

  • What does virtuosity mean?
  • Who deserves the description?
  • Does it just mean playing fast?

Argghhh! Apologies again to those who sent in entries to the quiz from a couple of weeks ago. I did forget this time! I’ll be announcing the winner next week – someone remind me!

Let us know if you agree with us!

Very interesting discussion and it was good to reflect on what is meant by virtuosity. All your examples were spot on. There are so many, but a few of my favourite Yes virtuoso moments …
Bill Bruford’s incredibly precise drumming/percussion on Heart of the Sunrise.
Steve’s guitar runs and solos on Yours Is No Disgrace.
Rick Wakeman’s solo in the opening half hour of the ABWH show in 1989 (I was there at Wembley). It seemed like he was using some different sounds and his playing was pretty much at its peak.
You mentioned Tony Kaye’s solo in Starship Trooper on 9012Live, I would add Trevor’s solo on the same song.
Alan and Chris’s great interlocking playing on That, That Is – brilliantly recorded as well.
Jon’s singing which I would argue can be as virtuosic as all the instrumentalists in the band, e.g. We Have Heaven, Gates of Delerium (a truly amazing vocal performance when you listen closely), Awaken. Jon has an ability to make unusual lyrics sound quite natural – others have tried and failed!
Thanks for a thought provoking podcast.
