Hi Mark! Enjoyed hearing you talk about this release. Regarding the CGI segments, they are indeed permanent on this release and there’s no way to change to the actual concert footage during those moments here. When we interviewed Bob Cesca on Yesshift a couple months ago, he mentioned that when Symphonic Live was rereleased on Blu-Ray years ago, the people in charge went with the one layer instead of having dual layers like the original DVD has.

And according to Bob, over the course of Yes material changing hands between labels, the original master recording of the concert got lost.

If I recall correctly, he (and maybe Jon Dee as well) suggested getting the footage from a DVD copy and upscaling those moments that happened during the symbol appearances and inserting them into the Blu-Ray, but I guess Mercury just kept going along with its process and didn’t go with that suggestion.

And regarding Tom Brislin, he was hired by the band knowing that they were planning to get Rick Wakeman back eventually. Rick was even invited to do this Amsterdam concert since it was being filmed, but his schedule wouldn’t allow it. And I’m glad it didn’t, because now we have footage of Tom playing with Yes. I do think on any Yes album, Tom could’ve injected some great creative contributions, but of course he’s been busy with Kansas and has his place there.

Hi Steven,
Great to hear from you. Thank you for your comments. Yeah I figured that there was a loss of the original material needed. I agree about Tom…it’s great having Tom on a Yes concert. He played incredibly well.

Hope you are doing well.

Thanks Mark for another great episode. I was lucky enough to see Yes twice on the Symphonic tour. I was living in Singapore at the time but I was so desperate to see them that I flew back to the UK – does that make me a 5 percenter! It remains in my top 3 Yes concerts.
Such a shame that on the new release you can’t toggle between the concert footage and the animations, some which I always found a bit naff. For this reason my vote has to go to the original even though the blu ray sound quality is slightly better.

Hello Mark,
Great to hear from you.
Thank you for the kind words in regards to the episode. It was a fun one to do.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds the “no switching between scenes” option ….annoying.

Oh and travelling from Singapore to the UK to see Yes live! You are certainly a 5 per center.

Thanks again for your support.
PS – I have already recorded this week’s episode…so I won’t be able to mention your comment in my opening segment. But I’m very pleased that you did comment.
