This week, Mark and I had a think about the Yes songs we like that include contrasts – one of my favourite aspects of progressive rock – and Yes music. We both chose 2 songs to talk about in depth but also went on a bit about other songs that also fit this category. It was another very interesting conversation – at least I thought so.
- What songs do we choose?
- What do we mean by contrast?
- Do our selections cover a wide range of eras of the band?
Let us know if you agree with us!

Mark and Kevin
I enjoyed hearing your selections while out ventilating the dog yesterday morning.
When I heard of the show’s topic I immediately thought of the usual suspects from the ‘Close to the Edge’ period so was pleasantly surprised by the scope of your selections.
‘I am waiting’ was an inspired choice, although there were many to choose from during Trevor Rabins tenancy in the band.
I haven’t heard that track for several years and had forgotten how good it was.
But my favourite from that period that meets the criteria is probably ‘Final Eyes’.
My favourite contrasting sections is probably Ricks side of Topographic Oceans (The Remembering) , with Ricks moog noodling against the bands swelling chords. These sections are very ambient in contrast to the song sections.
Kevin I was interested to learn that you have been listening to ‘True’ in your car. The album really grows on the listener. Wonderful old-style yes music.
I agree it will be interesting to compare that recording with anything produced this year by Steve Howe and his current band mates.
Congratulations also to Steve for his recent birthday.
Thanks again for forensic consideration of this great band
Thanks Alan. Yes there are many contrasts to enjoy from all eras of the band. Talk is very much worth revisiting and I also always forget how good Big Generator is, despite its ‘difficult’ genesis!
Many thanks for the comment!
Another Great show, I must listen to “That, That Is” again sometime. Hearing Mark mention mountains during the discussion about “South Side of the Sky” I was reminded of something I chanced upon about 20 years ago when researching Rock Climbing. It’s traditional that the first person who develops a climbing route gets the chance to name it. On Beacon Hill in Leicestershire, a Yes fan must have pioneered many routes because several are named after Yes songs. There is a handy Guide here ; https://www.leicestershirebouldering.co.uk/beacon-hill.html
So if you want to climb on the silent wings of freedom you now know where to go. You could also act as the belayer on relayer and with this guide you have the keys to ascension.
