Yes Tracks Through Time – Ritual – Shows, Symphonic and Drama – 608

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller

We continue our Tales from topographic oceans obsession this week with a look at 3 very different live recordings of side 4, Ritual – Nous Sommes du Soleil. The 3 different performances are included in the show notes below. They are from Yesshows (1980) , Symphonic Live (2002) and Topographic Drama (2017). This means we have the following musicians to listen to: Anderson, Squire, White, Moraz, Howe, Downes, Brislin, Sherwood, Davison, Schellen and the whole of the European Festival Orchestra. Wow. There are many differences between the recordings so listen along and see what you think.

  • Which is the best performance?
  • No Wakeman?
  • A whole symphony orchestra – what does it add?

Let us know if you agree with us!

One of the advantages of the new format is that all members of the group have the same ability to post content, so it’s a bit more egalitarian, or somesuch. Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from: archive.org

Virgil and Steve Howe’s Nexus – 309

Virgil and Steve Howe - Nexus
Virgil and Steve Howe – Nexus

Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Michel Arsenault, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier.

We announce the winner of the vinyl Topographic Drama competition and review the new Virgil and Steve Howe album, Nexus. It’s a lovely collection. There’s also time for a 2 pence about ARW headlining a festival in June 2018!

  • The pieces on the album were piano demos – how have they been finished off?
  • Does the album work as a whole?
  • Is it limited by being an instrumental record?

What 80s music could be played on the YES50 tour? – 308

Yes 80s Output
Yes 80s Output

Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Michel Arsenault, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier.

As we wait for YES50, we took the opportunity to think about what 80s music could be played by Yes, as suggested by both Steve Howe and Geoff Downes. We also announce a COMPETITION to win a vinyl copy of Topgraphic Drama – Live Across America! Finally, there’s a thought-provoking 2 pence…

  • From the 4 Yes albums released in the 80s what music might feature in YES50?
  • What might be the determining factors?
  • What songs from these albums have been performed since the 80s?

YES-Topographic Drama
YES-Topographic Drama

Produced by Michel Arsenault, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier.

We had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Yes keyboard player Geoff Downes onto the show this week to talk about the forthcoming #Yes50 celebrations and the wonderful, new Topographic Drama – Live Across America album. Geoff shares his thoughts on the inclusion of Tony Kaye in the concerts on the 50th Anniversary tour and how he expects it to work. We also listen in depth to the new live album and share our thoughts on that.

  • What does the new album sound like?
  • What are the performances like?
  • How does Geoff see the Tony Kaye special guest situation working?
