Our favourite 80s Yes lyrics – 629

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller

ANderson, Trevor Horn and Trevor Rabin. It’s an area we seldom look at so it was very enjoyable to examine a different aspect of the music of Yes and I definitely learned a lot from what Mark said about his choices. I’m sure you will as well. As always, we’d love to see what your suggestions are for great 80s Yes lyrics so do leave your choices on the show notes for this episode.

  • Are there differences between lyrics by different Yes frontmen?
  • Do the other writers try to sound like Jon Anderson?
  • What makes a good Yes lyric?

    Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from: archive.org

I enjoyed that. Now not being an expert on writing lyrics, but someone who listens to them. I have always thought that either the esoteric or the simply plain blunt ones used by Jon Anderson have be just right for the music.

I am hard pushed to think of a song that doesn’t work really. That’s not to say every song is a 10 clearly that’s not possible, but getting his thoughts and expression down on paper he has been absolutely fantastic, decade after decade.

Trevor Rabin and JA combined worked well and it brought a whole new feel together.

Very enjoyable episode. I rarely try to make any meaning out of lyrics, I hear more the sounds of the words, so it was definitely another perspective. I do think that lyrics on 90125 were heavily modified by Jon. Just listen to Trevor’s 90124.

Great idea for a show. Well executed as always. Thanks
Appreciate the link to Sound Chaser.
I have always thought Oliver would be my dream replacement if Geoff retired. But Tom….

I’ve never analysed Yes lyrics as for me at least they seem to be more about texture and impression than literal.
Having said that Mark may be correct in his thinking about the Rabin period lyrics.
In discussing “Hearts”, I was surprised that you didn’t mention that Jon made a version of this song on his fabulous album “Change We Must”, which further gives me the understanding that it is very much one of his songs.
