YMP Geeks talk to Band Geek, Richie Castellano – 501

Produced by Wayne Hall, Jeffrey Crecelius and Preston Frazier

Mark and I had a brilliant time this week speaking to Richie Castellano about his Band Geek Yes covers. Multi-instrumentalist Richie is passionate about Yes and a lot of other music and if you haven’t seen his Band Geek YouTube channel, then what are you waiting for? It’s amazing.

  • How does Richie choose songs to cover?
  • What is the rehearsal and production process like?
  • What have been Richie’s favourite Yes covers?

Listen to the episode and let us know what you think!

Richie has been a member of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT since 2004:

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from: archive.org

On the most recent Cruise To The Edge (2019), on a very late night (following Late Night Live – so it was technically morning!), a bunch of us were lucky enough to (literally) stumble upon none other than Tom Brislin and Chris Clark in the Schooner Lounge. Tom was at the baby grand piano and Chris was at a small electronic keys rig appropriated from another artist (who was present and looking none too happy about it). They were just playing stuff together off the tops of their heads – ELP, Genesis, Yes, etc., including “Cinema Show” and “Firth of Fifth” by Genesis and SOUND CHASER! It was brilliant and absolutely thrilling; the sort of unique, one-off kind of performance you can only experience – by pure chance – on CTTE. Vocals were performed by Chris and the 30 or so of us gathered ‘round. As for me, I was inebriated enough to “help out” by playing “bar rail hand drums” on “Cinema Show” alongside Lisa Wetton (John Wetton’s widow) – I didn’t find who she was until much later that day. Not something I’ll ever forget.

Yes, sorry. You’ll need to delete and re-download to get the whole episode. There was a technical glitch.

The video of the Band Geeks playing the entire Close to the Edge is amazing. Can’t imagine how they could learn all that music. Must be seen to be believed.
