Yes Tracks Through Time Part 13 – The Fish – 283

A whole lot of Fish!
A whole lot of Fish!

Produced by Preston Frazier, David Gordon, Bill Govier, Wayne Hall and Michel Arsenault.

This week it was great to welcome long-time listener, Ken Fuller, onto the show. We listen to the bass master-work, The Fish, and its second iteration, Whitefish, from a variety of different Yes periods. We had a great time!

  • Which version is better?
  • Bruford or White?
  • How good was Squire?

Listen to the episode then let us know what you think!

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Thanks for giving me the chance to participate in the conversation on the podcast. A couple of extra points on the different versions that I thought of:

9012Live 1984 – Amazing Grace (not sung) precedes Whitefish
“Yes, Yes” from Tempus Fugit sung by Anderson (?) Is this the only time Jon Anderson sang something from Drama?

Union Tour, London (6/29/91) – LDR leads into Whitefish. By the Union Live version (8/7/91) Saving My Heart is the lead in. Also Amazing Grace is now sung after Whitefish.

Budapest 3/31/98 – Whitefish does NOT include the “Schindleria Praematurus” section but includes an extended Alan White drum solo (with some quotes from Ritual).

Cheers

Looking forward to Shellfish. Wish Billy and Jay would do it on the tribute album.

All the times I had seen Yes Chris never disappointing the fans he was the only one who could make that Rickenbacker bass make wonderful noise. The one and only Mr. Chris Squire Lead bass.
Love the way he picked and not only that but he had a nice set of chops there was nothing he could not do. Yes would never had been Yes with out Chris.
Miss him so…..
Great show gents.

It was great to hear an episode all about our favourite Yes musician. Especially so to hear from Ken F who was at the ’72 gig.
I loved Mark’s “Fresh Fish” quip.

For me the longer versions of The Fish were because Chris played the parallel sections of the multitrack recording in a linear mode.

The first time I saw Chris play live was the Relayer tour in april 1975. The thing which was burned into my memory was his solo in Ritual.
