Yes Talk with guitarist Fernando Perdomo – 435

Fernando with Steve Hackett on the Cruise to the Edge

Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier

This week, Mark and I had a hugely enjoyable conversation with the amazing Fernando Perdomo. A long-term collaborator with a previous guest, Dave Kerzner, Fernando tells us about his fascination with Peter Banks, his work on the 50th Anniversary Yes tribute CD and his own music in the new Peter Banks continuation project, The New Empire whose album is out soon. Fernando has even given us permission to play a song from the new album exclusively here on the show so listen out for that later on – I’m sure you’ll agree it’s brilliant.

Mark and I also had time to record our thoughts in a two pence segment about the rumours around the producer for the new Yes album. Hold on tight for that as well.

Fernando in full flow
  • How does Peter Banks’ style differ from Steve Howe’s?
  • What drew Fernando to the music of Yes?
  • How is Fernando preserving the legacy of Peter Banks?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Good to hear from someone with such an interest in all things Yes and about all the line-ups. I think we could talk for hours on the subject, when the pubs reopen eh?

Fern is a great, multi-talented musician, songwriter & producer. I’ve seen him perform each time he has been on the Cruise to the Edge. He & his lady are lovely to talk to. The 2018 photo by my wife is when Fern signed my copy of the “Uncle Joe’s Record Guide: Progressive Rock” book. I was a writer, research assistant & editor for its ’89 release. Mine is now signed by over 300 progressive artists since ’89.

For what it’s worth… for a V E R Y L O N G time, “The Man You Always Wanted Me To Be” was the ONLY song from “Fly From Here” that was included in my iTunes library.

Great photo, BTW, of Fernando playing so wildly that he lost his signature hat! That’s from the pre-cruise party for the most recently actually completed Cruise To The Edge, in 2019, I believe. I remember seeing that hat go flying; Fernando plays his guitar with his entire body, not unlike Alex Lifeson of Rush.

Great interview, Kevin, and very informative. I’ve spoken with Fernando a few times, on the Cruise – he’s always very approachable and friendly, and if there’s one thing he absolutely loves to talk about, it’s music – Yes music, Pink Floyd, whatever, he’s just a very down-to Earth kinda guy. Good show this week (goodier than average, IMHO).
