Yes singles part 13 – Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe – 332

ABWH in all its wonderful variety
ABWH in all its wonderful variety

Produced by Robert Nasir, Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier

Depending on your point of view, this week we take a detour from Yes – or not. It’s time to look at Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe and the singles from that self-titled album. There are plenty of variations to consider and we also have time to think a bit about Lee Pomeroy and ARW as well.

  • Is this Yes?
  • Does it matter?
  • What were the singles like?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

I am perfectly happy to include ABWH in to the “canon” of Yes. Even Yes (Official) lists it as an “official” album on Yesworld.com. In addition, I am also willing to accept a Yes Featuring ARW as an “official” Yes album as well… if they ever produce anything…

Well Friday is complete again as I get my little Yes fix. Thank you again, I have to say that ABWH was just like a Yes gig when I saw them, it would have to try very hard not to have been. From the artwork, staging, video work and 4/5 of classic Yes….it was pretty much Yes.

I think the changing lineup for Yes ARW on one hand would be good to be stable however I do agree it’s the key three that fans want to see. Ill be at the O2 and I’m not upset by the change, I’m excited to see them maybe the only time this year.

Oh please do come and join in the Yes historic bus tour for that weekend. The last outing for it, don’t miss out.

Once again great episode chaps

Keep Yessing
Dave

ARW and ABWH are all legitimate YES IMO. This is what happens over time when so many Alumni manage to survive long enough to re-contribute. As a fan I should be thrilled, but alas, aside from the live shows of both camps (which I enjoyed immensely) I would trade it all for some NEW MATERIAL from both sides.

PS) Though surely dated, I can live with Bruford’s drum sounds on ABWH as they retain a retro “charm” all their own. Perhaps he can have Trevor Horn re-record the parts with REAL drums, ha-ha.

PPS) Nice job on the episode guys—it was 1989 all over again for awhile!

I haven’t had much to say about this singles series, as I am not much when it comes to collecting, never was one much for buying singles and, in general, always prefer the album versions of… just about everything. I would like to say, though, that, of the dozens of podcasts I listen to, this is the only one so far to employ the word “churlish.” Good job, Kevin!

Re the upcoming Yes featuring ARW tour you talked about at the end, there is a 2nd US leg starting in Jan. 2019. Hopefully it will include a Canadian date or dates.

I have not been a huge fan of ABWH, actually, in general. I give them that they are, or were the version of the actual band Yes during the interval between Big Generator and Talk. It is more legit than Union, which also falls into this time slot. (The Union TOUR was awesome, by the way, so no problems with that). But, when Talk came out, ABWH got retired for me, along side Union, as an album of “Yes” material.

I DO love a few songs, but a couple of them aren’t even on the original ABWH album. So this may be the one Yes album where I like the singles a great deal. Vultures in the City, (which was on the B side of my Brother of Mine cassette single), and the song “I’m Alive”, based on the brief movement from the album’s “Quartet” are wonderful bits that I still listen to from time to time, but I only have them in MP3 format. From the album proper, I love Brother of Mine, Birthright, and Let’s Pretend. Quartet……. I like somewhat, but given a choice, I’ll take the fully realized I’m Alive over the Quartet suite. The rest of the album I found to be something between meh and annoying. Not their best period. It is in my bottom bunch for Yes albums. along with Yes, Time and A Word, Keys 1&2(Studio Material), Union and The Ladder. Having said that, all of these albums have at least a cut or two worth buying the album for, and that’s why I have them all. I have dearly loved ALL the tours I’ve seen. Even the ones supporting these albums.

ABWH – great to be reminded once again of this great Yesmusic. Vultures is a real stand out track for me and I am delighted it is on later reissues of the album. I’m Alive, single version, is one I really enjoy too. Thanks for the reminder!

I have the 10″ version of Brother of Mine. It includes the 6 minute version of the song, and Vultures on the B-side. It also included a 10″ poster, which is the snake skin that is also animated at the end of the music video.

Oh, also, just noticed I mentioned you on the show, didn’t I? Hope I pronounced your name vaguely correctly…

You did, thank you! That was very sweet of you. You pronounced my name way better than most English (or foreigners for that matter) do. I’m currently writing an English version of the Norwegian review I did of Yes featuring ARW in Oslo last week. Will let you know when it’s finished. I also took photos.

Oh, by the way. “I’m Alive” was also released in Norway. At least I found the 7″ in a regular record shop. The cover is beautiful and it’s one of my most prized possesions in my record collection, even if I’m at a cynical age now that I don’t really like the syrupy production.
