Yes Music for Life Events – 291

GTR
GTR

Produced by Preston Frazier, Bill Govier, Wayne Hall and Michel Arsenault.

What Yes music would go with which life event? This is a topic suggested by Jeffrey Crecelius and was great fun for Mark and me to discuss. There’s also time for two Two Pences and Mark reviews the GTR album.

  • Titles or moods – which is best?
  • Yes music for every occasion?
  • Should we be interested in compilation albums?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Great topic/discussion guys!

Here’s my vote for Yes songs that would be the soundtrack for the following life events (of a hypothetical person):

Close to the Edge – for the three months spent on intensive retreat in Burma going through the first stage of enlightenment.

Tales from Topographic Oceans (or Awaken) – for the next six months spent on a beach in Bali trying to understand what the hell just happened, and reading everything from Nietzsche to Nisargadatta.

Gates of Delirium – after leaving Bali and returning to the “real world” of responsibilities and being painfully sensitive to just how chaotic and in constant conflict our world actually is, but in the end knowing that solace (the light) is always within you.

Awaken – the song for the rest of your life when you’ve come to know that enlightenment is a permanent change in perception of how the world really is (warts and all) and that it’s all ok – i.e., the solace is everywhere.

Though I suppose the Yes critics could be right and it’s all just a bunch of pretentious, self-indulgent, hippy-dippy nonsense.

Hey Greg,
A very interesting way of using the Yes songs. Tales from Topographic Oceans while sitting on a beach in Bali. ..can’t complain about that!!
Thanks again for listening and your support.

Hi Mark,

I’m glad you found my take interesting and appreciate your feedback. I’ve been making the case for years (other Yes chatrooms, etc.) that there’s a lot more going on in the lyrics than just “word painting.” Many people disagree and of course Yes (Jon) critics just roll their eyes.

I guess in the end what matters is what the music/lyrics mean to you, which is what a topic like this is all about I suppose.

Cheers!

Here’s how I always interpreted the title “Sound Chaser” (definition from Wikipedia)

“Chaser:
A shot of whisky, tequila, or vodka, when served neat in a shot glass, is often accompanied by a “chaser” (a mild drink consumed after a shot of hard liquor) or a “water back” (a separate glass of water). These terms commingle as well; it is common in many locales to hear a “beer back” ordered as the chaser to a shot. A drink may specifically be ordered “no chaser” as well.

A “chaser” in the UK however usually refers to a shot taken after a pint of beer or similar.”

So, nine minutes of insanity following 22 minutes of the main insanity – it’s a sound chaser.

Hey Joseph,

An audio chaser so to speak…so Gates would be the shot of vodka…followed by Soundchaser as the beer chaser. Interesting theory.
Frankly I prefer Cognac chased by water myself…but to each their own.
Thanks again for your continued support my friend.

Thanks for another great show and humoring me with the topic. My father-bride dance music was Time and a Word and my funeral instruction which may rile the church is In the Presence Of. Survival is a mourning song for me. For a reason…

With regard to titles that predict the music, I thought the rhythms in Subway Walls echo the combination of visual and aural patterns one experiences while riding underground. Was this intended? Probably not!

Greetings Jeffrey,
Thanks for the great topic idea. “In The Presence of” is a great song…and one I’ve never thought about in use for a funeral. Fascinating.

Regarding the set list drop it The Meeting by ARW: my impression of it when it was included in last year’s US tour was that it functioned as an interlude like a Howe solo in a Yes concert. Maybe they want to distance themselves from anything that reminds us is Steve.

Hey Jeffrey,

In regard to your comment about The Meeting…it’s very possible…Although playing Heart of the Sunrise and Perpetual Change wouldn’t help…they are very much reminders of Steve’s impact.

I have no music planned for my funeral – I do not like the thought of holding my family and friends hostage to listen to my ridiculous tastes in music as my parting gift. I will say that there is only one song by Yes that I can imagine listening to as I drift off into the nether-world. The More You Live – Let Go. Lyrically and musically it is a perfect contemplation on a life lived – but an urge to Let Go …
