Why did Yes want…Rick Wakeman? Part 2 – 543

Produced by Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius

After a period of ill health I’m finally back this week with the second part of our Why did Yes want Rick Wakeman feature. Many thanks to everyone who has sent wishes for a speedy recovery.

We also have the final word from Simon Barrow on the CTTE 50th Anniversary UK and Irish tour and we start with some news from around the interwebs.

  • What were the two previous albums from Strawbs like?
  • Why was Rick fed up with that band?
  • What were press and fan reactions like to CTTE50?

Take a listen to the episode and then let us know what you think below!

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from: archive.org

I’m glad you are finally listening to some Strawbs music. I’ve been a fan of theirs since the 70s, not counting their pre-Rick releases, but from there up to their latest with Dave Bainbridge.
One point that many don’t know: Rick appears on the ‘Dragonfly’ album, playing piano on the longest track, “The Vision of the Lady of the Lake,” as Kevin mentioned. Most only know of his work on ‘Just a Collection…’ and “From the Witchwood.’ It’s worth searching for ‘Dragonfly’ or “The Vision…” track just to hear Rick’s wonderful piano playing.
I’ve included my Rick signed copies of 2 Strawbs albums, never posted online. Rick was happy to look them over & sign them for me. He said he doesn’t have them on vinyl & hasn’t listened to them in many many years.

Really interesting episode. There are many more recent connections between Wakeman and Strawbs, of course. It was a reunion of the band on Rick’s television show ‘Gas Tank’ in 1983 that resulted in an invitation to reform to headline that year’s Cambridge Folk Festival. Current (and recent past) members Chas Cronk and Tony Fernandez have also played with Rick on numerous projects.
