What did they do next part 12a – Eddie Jobson – 426

In the UK we are coming to the end of the second week of total lock down and my friends and family are currently coping quite well thanks to the wonderful work of the NHS (including my wife, Sarah) and all the key workers. Thank you to each and every one of them.

As I said last week, we are aiming to ensure the YMP provides a bit of normality through this difficult time so this week we are perhaps bending the rules slightly to consider what Eddie Jobson did after leaving Yes.

We also have time for a two pence suggested by Fred Barringer.

  • Eddie Jobson? Why?
  • Why does Kevin not know anything about U.K?
  • Which album was Eddie working on before, during and after being a member of Yes?

Listen to the episode and let us know what you think!

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

My history with Eddie Jobson goes back to first meeting him when I interviewed UK on their first US tour in ’78, in Cleveland, then again on their ’79 tour. Saw him with Jethro Tull in concert in ’80, with the UZ Project in 2010, where we talked; and UK gigs in 2012, 2013 & 2014, where we talked after each gig. I can highly recommend everyone check out all of his solo work, and all of the bands he has played with. But especially The Green Album and Theme of Secrets albums. Eddie is a brilliant musician, and a perfectionist as you’d imagine. I’ve told him he should write a book about his music career.

Very interesting eps…When I saw the title I was like “who is Eddie Johnson?” I thought I knew a bit about YES. Clearly not so as always you enhance my knowledge.
But after listening, the thing that stood out the most was (as I don’t follow social media) the confirmation ARW was over. Even before you said the words I guessed Trevor would be the one to confirm it. I was so saddened to not have seen them and a few (quite a few) months back you (they) hinted at new music, but alas not to be. It was like Mark said that you have a view they all “enjoy a cup of tea” and enjoy doing it but it was brief moment. I enjoyed their new spins on some of the classics and was hoping for something completely new, but anyway I can always put on the live album (you can tell it is live cause you can hear the crowd!).
Looking forward to hearing what Eddie has to offer!

Good to hear Eddie Jobson featured on the YMP. Check out his solo piece “Paris by Night” from Curved Air’s Lovechild album. Utterly sublime…

Regarding the end of ARW confirmed by Trevor, some of my photos from the very last Yes featuring ARW concert are included in Jon Kirkman’s new Yes concert photo book, Tales from Photographic Oceans. I was backstage before the gig with the band, Trev’s wife Shelley, and management, and knew that was the end of the road.

Any thoughts on Yes playing a medley on the next tour, looks like it was just myself then that likes them.
In my eyes they haven’t done one for decades so, its something new and fresh. I know Yes like to play full tracks as it’s how they are written and composed, and yes I see it could stop a flow, but, I like the 78 one, JA and Circa did them really well.

Anyway, it’s probably Never going to happen, have a listen to the ones I list and let me know what you think.

Back to the lockdown now………
