The Royal Affair Tour setlist – 385

Yes Live June 2019
Yes Live June 2019

Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier, Bill Govier and VR Hoisington

This week, Mark and I talk about the Royal Affair Setlist – so, obviously, if you don’t like spoilers, don’t listen!

Also, we mention later on that Mark is going to a Yes concert next week which we will them talk about – but it’s actually 2 weeks until that event so there will be something different from us in between.

Listen and let us know what you think!

  • How does the balance of the setlist look?
  • How much will Alan White be able to do?
  • What are the surprises?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Well despite how it is disheartening to see Alan on a side drum kit, during the epic “Gates of Delirium”, which as we know he contributed heavily to. It is reassuring to see him fill in for other songs for their entirety behind his normal kit. As he has been doing since recovering from his strenuous back surgery. Before I forget, today is Alan’s 70th Birthday!! Happy Birthday to the man who took his YES gig at a very late notice.

A tremendous thank you to Kevin and Mark for hosting this podcast and to each and every producer; behind the show. And the Patreon supporters. With a special thanks to “TapeheadToo”, for uploading his recording of “Gates of Delirium”, during the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania concert, the first on the Royal Affair Tour.

Did I see someone saying he’s on the proper kit for Gates at some shows? Thanks so much for the kind words, Brady.

I think Yes played a brave set list. It will be interesting to see what people think of the video of GOD and others. Of course a video is no way to really hear it correctly as we have found out so many times in the past, being at the gig to hear the full sound is the only way. As we have a year to wait in the UK these little well filmed gems are what we need.

Hey USA, you get Yes, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman tours, enjoy every minute while you can.

My only concert indulgence is next week with King Crimson. Ill be around at the Yes plaque probably all thee days before the gigs.

Alan happy birthday and keep well.

Guys you are doing a splendid job and I love my YMP every Friday. Oh persistence is the key on collecting Yes and related artists as I should have some amazing material very soon. Just when you thought you had seen it all, there it is a surprise.

Loving the big screens in tour, the Roger Dean tent, can’t wait to see the tour programme.

David

Yes, I agree, Dave – brave. Can’t wait for you to disclose that mystery item and thanks for the kind words.

Ah! Yes! Good point! Looks like he’s swapping solos on this tour as he has done before. Not done Masquerade since 2010 – time for a return?

Thanks YES Music Podcast! I was pretty excited to see this setlist and I will get to see it for myself in 39 short days! Getting to hear ‘Gates Of Delirium’ live will certainly be a personal highlight for me. Also looking forward to hearing ‘No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed’ and ‘America’ as I am a big fan of old yes (BTW: You sent me a copy of ‘Yesterdays’ on vinyl a few years ago as a prize!) . I have a special anniversary coming up next week. 6/20/2019 will be the 40th anniversary of my very first concert. It was a YESshow on the Tormato tour at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA on 6/20/1979. That was a life-changing moment for me and made me a YESfan for life! Keep up the good work!

Hello Chaps

It’s certainly an interesting set list, and while that version of Gates feels a little…shall we say…’loose’….in that clip, the band do seem to be able to tighten up after a few gigs these days, so no doubt it will improve.

I must, admit, however, that when I heard they were playing ‘Imagine’ my heart sank slightly. There are many rather more imaginative – more Yes-like – ways of paying tribute to John Lennon. A revival of ‘Every Little Thing’ for instance. Those that saw Yes on the Drama tour in the UK will remember that the band closed the show with an acapela version of ‘Man In A White Car’. The band were in the middle of the tour when Lennon was murdered, and dedicated that final song to him (although they were playing it before he died).

Finally – just a quick one to point out that to me, the Symphonic Tour versions of everything (including Gates) are – to my mind – very much ‘full band’ versions, despite Kevin suggesting they aren’t. To suggest they are not, and something ‘other’ potentially belittles the role that Tom Brislin played as keyboard player on that tour. He did an amazing job, including on Gates, where he’s playing a lot of Moraz’s parts, albeit criminally low in the mix, while the orchestra cleverly accentuates the existing arrangement(and does a fair amount of the heavy lifting) rather than making the piece anything hugely different. Maybe I’m just still annoyed cos on the night I saw the tour they didn’t play it. Bah!

Thanks – and keep up the good work!

Stephen

Thanks Stephen. Yes, I see what you’re saying about my ‘not full band’ comment – I agree that Tom, who we have spoken to several times on the show, does a magnificent job and I’d like to see him on stage with Yes again sometime! I didn’t see Gates either on the Symphonic Tour!!

I’m very tempted to believe that the inclusion of “Gates” and even more probably “No Opportunity” in the 2019 Yes live repertoire was inspired by members of the band seeing those numbers performed by tribute bands at the 50th anniversary celebration events.
So, Kevin, keep working on the bass, form a Yes tribute band with Mark on guitar and play all of “Tormato” in front of Yes whenever you can. They’re bound to get the hint.

Blimey – that’s a bit of a tall order! I’m just glad I’ve got a year to practise for the next PlayForChris!!
