Tales From Photographic Oceans and from Cruising to the Edge with Jon Kirkman – 420

Kevin interviewing Jon Kirkman

This week Mark and I caught up with Yes author and friend of the band, Jon Kirkman, who told us about his new Yes live photography book as well as the next Cruise to the Edge which he is co-hosting. The book is called Tales from Photographic Oceans and it promises to be an amazing publication, one which is limited to only 300 copies as well.

  • What’s the new book all about?
  • What’s the Cruise To The Edge all about?
  • How important is the Relayer Tour to the band?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

As a friend of Jon Kirkman’s I’m biased, but Jon is always a treat to talk to, as you are finding out. I’ve assisted him with 4 books now, the Yes photo book being the latest. This is an amazing collection of photos from ’69 to ’19, and a must for serious Yes fans.

And as a veteran of the Cruise to the Edge, I always give it my highest recommendation for those who have the time & money to attend. Where else can you have Steve Hackett in line right behind you at the coffee station on the first morning, hang out with Focus, have lunch with Stick Men or members of Sound of Contact, or be on the mandatory muster drill with Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, Tony Levin & Marillion members, as has happened to me & my wife. Not to mention our regular meals with my old friend Roger Dean. It’s prog paradise, so come along if you can next year!

As a friend of Jon Kirkman’s I’m biased, but I can still honestly say his books are marvelous. It’s been my pleasure to help with the new Yes photo book, and the previous Yes books & the Genesis book. The photos are beautiful to behold, from ’69 to the Royal Affair tour last summer. Only 1 of the many I’ve contributed, which run from ’77 to ’19, has ever been seen before, as is the case with most of the photos in the book. I’ve also contributed many of my concert tickets, going back to 1972, including from the cancelled 40th anniversary tour in summer 2008. And Jon has other books in mind, which I’m not at liberty to discuss yet, but which I will start on in March.

As for the cruise, as a veteran since the first in ’13, I can tell you that each cruise is a prog paradise, and if you have the time & money to attend you won’t ever forget it or regret it.
