Steve Howe talks about his solo re-releases PLUS ‘Yes Guess Who’! – 686

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius

In a truly epic episode this week, I had a lovely conversation with Steve Howe about the re-release of two of his solo albums, Portraits of Bob Dylan and Natural Timbre. Then, Mark and I enjoyed goofing around asking each other to guess the Yes men being referred to in various quotations. Do play along with that yourself after listening to my great chat with Steve.

  • Why is Steve re-releasing these two albums now?
  • How do they differ in approach?
  • How important is Bob Dylan to music generally and to Steve?

CAT NO: Portraits of Bob Dylan – HSLP011, HSCD011,

Natural Timbre -HLP012, HSCD012

Really enjoyed this episode. Great interview with Steve. Conducting a good interview can be challenging but thought Kevin did a fantastic job. Also liked the game, complete with background lounge music! Along with the many suggestions you’ll probably receive about future iterations, should consider doing it only with band member statements about other band members. Makes it juicier that way! Thanks again!

Thank you Steve. Very kind of you. Steve was certainly in very good form. Great suggestion about the quiz. I’m looking forward to it already!

I love both Natural Timbre & the Portraits of Bob Dylan records! I’m a pro guitar player & Steve has long been one of my all time fav guitarists. Kevin, I would very much love to read your choir director’s dissertation on Tarkus & Supper’s Ready, let us know if he’s put it up online somewhere.
Thanks!

They are a lot more interesting than I was expecting. Some great performances on both and I really like the arrangements.

I will indeed ask Colin (Director) about that dissertation. I’m also toying with the idea of doing an episode with him on Yes lyrics and their links to ELP/Genesis.

Great interview with Tim Durling, Kevin! I’d recommend that all fans of the YMP watch/listen to it on YouTube.

It would be great if you could appear on the “Booked on Rock” podcast. The host, Eric Senich, is very thoughtful and a gentleman — and he really does his homework prior to conducting the interviews. And, importantly, he has a relatively large and highly targeted audience.

Excellent interview with Steve. It was great hear the discussion of some of the musical details on those albums. Dean Dyson is still around. He often performs near where I live, on Winchester High Street – busking I guess but with good amplification and always has an appreciative audience. He has a great voice and his guitar playing is really good too.

A few weeks late but I wanted to say I loved this episode. Kevin, your conversation with Steve felt so natural and I can tell he feels at ease when speaking with you. And i feel you only missed the first quiz question because you are too sweet and the answer would not occur to you. It’s a good quality to have! Mark, I have to say your comments about streaming inspired me to purchase (digitally) an album I had been listening to a lot recently on Spotify. “Black Noise” by FM – so at least the money stayed in Canada. 😀 Keep up the good work, both of you! These quiz segments are very challenging but also fun.
