Something’s Coming – Peter Banks and the new Yes album – 665

Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller

In a bumper double-feature episode (or something like that), Mark and I compare the Empire featuring Peter Banks version of Something’s Coming with the Yes studio version and we also indulge in a little bit of speculation about the forthcoming Yes album – and who doesn’t enjoy these kinds of guessing games? Well if you don’t, feel free to use the fast forward button.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun listening to some very early Yes and what Peter Banks did when he revisited it himself in 1979. Videos of the 2 songs are available below of course.

  • How similar are the 2 versions of Something’s Coming?
  • Does Peter Banks play it the same way he did with Yes?
  • What do we have in-store from Yes’ forthcoming new album?

Let us know if you agree with us!

After we spoke about a forthcoming Washington DC exhibition that includes Roger Dean’s Yessongs artwork, YMP listener Craig Tiren went along to see it. Here he is, suitable attired!

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts.

Hi Kevin and Mark

Just enjoyed your podcast on a long drive this morning. I was most particularly pleased to hear the weather updates from you both, but the discussion of Yes music was an added bonus..

After the show I listened to the two recordings of ‘Something’s Coming’ with interest. I hadn’t heard the Yes version for many years and had never hear the Pete Banks version at all. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.

I must confess I agreed with both your comments. The Yes original sounds much more coherent and engaging, with the latter more of a guitar/jam improvisation for Pete. To be fair, as one of you commented, this recording was probably never meant to have been made and publicly circulated, and was probably just a practice session. With editing and post production and vocals it would doubtless sound very different.

I will be interested to give the forthcoming ‘Yes’ album an unbiased and sympathetic listen.

Looking forward to the release of Kevin’s TFTO book…

Thanks for another great show

Thank you for the comment! We aim to please, and to provide useful meteorological information. Something’s Coming is a great, underrated song.

Nice to listen to the latest episode this morning. However, I feel Kevin understates the progressive nature of “Unknown Place”, with its lengthy instrumental section from about 3 to 7 minutes in. And Mark overstates the progressive nature of the Prog Collective! Dark Encounters has some nice playing, but over pretty straightforward compositional forms.

Well, I knew someone would pick me up on my comment. I should have prepared more carefully. You are, of course, correct. I didn’t mean Unknown Place at all. Thanks for pointing it out!
