Roine Stolt talks about Yes, Jon Anderson, The Flower Kings’ new album and more! 451

Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier

It was a great pleasure to speak to Roine Stolt this week about his forthcoming album with The Flower Kings, ‘Islands’. We also chatted about Yes, working with Jon Anderson on the Anderson Stolt record ‘Invention of Knowledge’ and other projects. He’s another very busy musician – even in these pandemic days.

  • What is the new Flower Kings music like?
  • Is anything happening with Anderson/Stolt?
  • What was the most challenging part of working with Jon Anderson?

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Hey There, Kevin and Mark… It’s been a while since I participated in our wonderful little group, but today’s episode (never quite satisfied with that term, as this is not an episodic format…) with Roine Stolte was quite enjoyable. The first time I ever encountered him was through Transatlantic; also the first time I had ever heard of Neal Morse, just through clicking on a Wickypedia link on Mike Portnoy’s page… “Hmmm… Transatlantic? What could this be?”

Anyway, I spoke with Roine – briefly, in passing – on the 2019 (?) Cruise To The Edge the day after The Sea Within’s second show, which I remember being on the pool deck… anyway, Roine is most definitely NOT known as a ‘shredder’ when it comes to his guitar playing, but – WOW – he was just tearing his guitar up during that show. I was quite impressed.

I was REALLY looking forward to the 2020 Cruise, as, through various incarnations, every single member of Transatlantic, including “phantom member” Daniel Gildenlowe was going to be onboard… there was simply NO WAY it couldn’t happen, right?

Right.

Well, now all of us Cruisers are patiently awaiting the resumption of the best music cruise on the high seas… in 2022.

OK – I guess I’ve got something to live for…

Onward…

Another nice interview. Roine is a lovely chap. I’ve been in touch with “Pale Rider” since first seeing & meeting him at the 1st Transatlantic concert, at NEARfest in 2000. We also hung out after the Flower Kings show at the 3 Rivers Prog Festival near Pittsburgh in Aug ’08. We’ve talked on the cruises that he’s attended. I have almost all of his albums, solo & with other groups. He’s told me that he’s a huge Steve Howe fan. The photo is backstage at the 3RP fest in ’08.

Gents, great interview! Roine is quite prolific, so it’s no surprise he continues to have a lot of irons in the fire. I am very much looking forward to his next collaboration with Jon, especially based on his comments, as well as the upcoming Transatlantic album in 2021!

Great interview and I am thrilled to hear a new Anderson/Stolt and Transatlantic album is in the works.
