Episode 188 – Billy Sherwood’s first time in Yes

Yes Magazine from 1998
Yes Magazine from 1998

With Billy Sherwood officially back as a Yes band member, I look at the first time he joined as a permanent member, through a Yes Magazine issue from 1998, kindly supplied by the Gottlieb Brothers.

  • What did Sherwood think of Open Your Eyes?
  • What did Steve Howe think of Open Your Eyes?
  • What was the 1997 concert tour like?

Take a listen to the episode and let me know what you think!

Theme music

The music I use is the last movement of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This has been used as introduction music at many Yes concerts. My theme music is not take from a live concert – I put it together from the following two creative commons sources: thanvannispen and archive.org

Indeed, The Ladder is overlooked. I think it’s some of Jon’s strongest later songwriting. The title track could fit very well on Going for the One. When I hear people say that Yes hasn’t done anything good in 30 year, I think the must not have really listened to The Ladder or Magnification.

As to Olias, I’ve long thought it is the interpretive key to Yes music, esp. the main sequence (as some call it).

I would have to agree with you Kevin the Ladder is a great album and offers up some of the best “Yes” offerings.
I guess that for the most part people who listen to music want it to be like this or that however Yes has always have and I believe always will be going beyond the normal and have always made their music different in ways that there fans will always want more from them.
If you look at all the music that has been recorded from just the members of Yes you can see that if you think your going to hear something of the same well they surprise you with other beats and tones and just a vast array of things that are truly well Yes! …

Just a side note here or observation not sure why I have not read or heard of anything form former Yes member Tony Kaye regarding the passing of Chris seems a bit odd to me anybody else??

Paul

Not seen anything from Kaye…maybe in the Prog magazine…? I will take a look. Thanks for the comment, once again, Paul.
